KINDRED SPIRITS IS LAUNCHED

The new 50+ club, Kindred Spirits, which is a cross community club for both men and women, was launched today in the Gilford Community Centre.  Councillor Olive Mercer, Chair of Banbridge District Council did the honour of officially opening the club and unveiling the Kindred Spirits plaque. The committee were delighted with the huge turnout at the event and the interest and enthusiasm shown.  Gilford folk are excited at the prospect of having an over 50s club in Gilford, a fact evidenced by the large turn out and number of membership forms completed. Councillors, Seamus Doyle and Liz Ingram and Banbridge District Chief Executive Liam Hannaway were amongst the invited guests to lend their support to the project.

Today’s launch was an opportunity to sign up for membership of the club, to get a programme of forthcoming activities and to meet other prospective members from within the community. This opportunity was seized by all present and a great buzz was evident in the room.

Cllr. Olive Mercer in opening the club expressed her delight at seeing this much needed club being set up.  She thanked Mary Quinn, Chair of Kindred Spirits and the hard working committee for the amount of work and effort that they have put in to establishing Kindred Spirits and she wished the club every success going forward.  Cllr Mercer was presented with a bouquet of flowers by Harold Massey, vice chair of the club.

Mary Quinn in her address thanked Cllr Mercer for her support and for launching the club.  She explained the origins of Kindred Spirits which was born out of requests from residents at the last Gilford Concerned Residents Group (GCRG) public meeting.  A number of residents asked to have an over 50s club in Gilford, similar to those operating in other parts of the Council area.  As vice chair of GCRG Mary Quinn took on the role of Chair of Kindred Spirits and took the project forward, a committee was established comprising, Harold Massey Vice Chair, Patricia Millar, Secretary, Ruth McBurney Assistant Secretary, Timothy Mayes, Treasurer, Patricia Derby and Margaret Johnston Assistant Treasurers and committee members Terry O’Donnell and Ronnie Beattie. A huge amount of background work went into setting up Kindred Spirits and bringing it to the launch stage.

In her speech she acknowledged the excellent support and work given to the group by Alan Wilson and his team in Gilford Community Centre, nothing was too much trouble to them. She expressed her appreciation and thanks to a number of local businesses namely, Linen House, Georgian Tea Rooms, NISA and Source Hygiene who donated foodstuff and catering materials for the launch event.  Laurencetown TLC was a great source of support in terms of lending catering equipment and being on hand to help with the catering at the launch.  The community were very well represented with the Community Police Officers dropping to lend their support and being warmly welcomed by residents.

All in all the launch event was a tremendous success and now Kindred Spirits looks forward to the first week of activities next Wednesday afternoon,19th March, 2 – 4 pm and going from strength to strength thereafter.
