October Turnings
October turnings can catch me by surprise
when gilding hues tinge tenacious leaves
with tones and colours that mix and mingle
in browns and russets,
in lingering greens and strengthened coppers.
October mornings can call me in a moment
to stop along my way,
and muse on mists' mysteries
that hold the questions and only hints of answers.
October leafings can console me
in their gentle letting go
that, with grace and gratitude,
come to find a space upon the earth
Great God of Autumn's turnings,
may I come to know
the rhythm of the seasons
that speak to me of time and place;
that invite me to engage in mortality's realities
and remind me of
Your Wonder and Your Providence,
Your Compassion and Your Love.
