January swivels us from year that is gone
to year that lies before us with its virgin pages
daring us to believe in what is possible;
promising us that life is not about
re-writing old scripts whose lines, like ourselves,
have become predictable.
January inverts realities in muted language
reminding us of fragility’s strength
where stubborn urgings towards birthing
push through winter’s soils
to speak to us of hope.
January issues invitations to begin afresh
and with snowdrop-trust to believe
that there is a life beyond the burial;
that it is right to strive to be released;
that the days will lengthen
and that warmth and love
will transform all things in time.
