One of Irelands Best Loved Plays Visits the Grand Opera House.
Following another sell out performance at this years ‘Out to Lunch Festival’ in January,
’ The Nomadic Theatre Company’ returns once more to a Belfast stage when they bring their hit play
‘The Rare Oul’ Times’
to the
Grand Opera House on Monday 9th May 2011
Enjoyed by well over 35,000 theatregoers on its odyssey around the Irish and British regional theatre circuit Ken Mc Elroy’s production is regarded as one of Irelands funniest and best loved plays of the last decade. The production has also played the Milwaukee Festival in 2001, the Edinburgh Fringe in 2003 and the Oktober Fest in Munich in 2010.
Featuring Oliver Moore as the bawdy and larger than life Brendan Behan and Ken Mc Elroy as the cantankerous and vitriolic Monaghan poet Patrick Kavanagh, the action takes place in the back room of the Bailey pub in 1950’s Dublin, where the audience eavesdrops as these two colourful characters discuss with great humour their loves, successes and failures in the Dublin of that period. The play highlights the complexities of both, their fiery temperaments and their longing for recognition from Dublin’s literary elite.
First performed in 1999 ‘The Rare Oul’ Times’ has enjoyed much success including a prestigious award in Dublin in 2001 for maintaining the best traditions of small Irish touring theatre. Writer Mc Elroy explains’ When we started out almost twelve years ago we had absolutely no idea of the wonderful journey that would follow. We are really looking forward to performing in Northern Ireland’s premier theatre and raising much needed funds to help in some little way secure the future of one of the great institutions of the Belfast arts scene the Cathedral Quarter Festival.
The ‘Rare Oul Times’ plays the Grand Opera House main stage on Monday 9th May at 8pm. All seats £10. Tickets can be purchased by calling into the Box Office in the theatre foyer, online at www.goh.co.uk or by telephoning 9024 1919
The artists are gifting all proceeds of this performance to the Cathedral Quarter Festival.
