On Tuesday 10th May the Icon of Our Mother of Perpetual Help will arrive in Newry Cathedral. It is visiting the 26 Cathedrals in Ireland, celebrating 150 years with the Redemptorists.
Blessed Pope Pius IX presented the Icon of Our Mother of Perpetual Help to the Redemptorists for veneration in their newly-built Church of St. Alfonso, Rome in December 1865. It was solemnly installed there on April 26th 1866. The Holy Father gave the Redemptorists the mandate: they were to promote devotion to Our Mother of Perpetual Help throughout the world. Just over a year later, the first copy arrived in Mount St. Alphonsus, Limerick. The devotion to Our Mother of Perpetual Help quickly spread to all parts of Ireland and continues to be an important part of the lives of many Irish people and others all around the world.
We encourage you to join us on Tuesday 10th May for the Mass of Welcome at 7.30pm in the Cathedral, Healing Service at 9.00pm and Prayer around the Icon at 11.00pm.
Petition leaflets are available in all parishes which can be brought with you to the Mass or placed in the boxes in the Cathedral prior to the 10th May.
