We were all saddened to hear of the death of Sound of Music star, Charmian Carr, who died on 17th September 2016, aged 73. Charmian played the part of Liesl, the eldest daughter.
Thanks to Deirdre Quail who alerted us to the Tullylish connection with Charmian.
Charmian Carr was born Charmian Farnon on December 27, 1942. She was the second of three daughters. Her father was Brian Farnon and her grandfather was Robert Joseph Farnon, brother of Deirdre's grandmother Mary Farnon Parkes and also Sarah Anne (Farnon) McCartan. Robert Joseph was also a cousin of the late Jack Farnon. Her mother, Rita Oehem, had been a vaudeville actress with her brother Eddy, and her father, Brian Farnon, was a musician.
Charmian's great grandparents (James and Lucy) are interred in Laurencetown cemetery beside the Parkes grave.
Robert Joseph emigrated from Laurencetown to Canada where he had 3 sons and a daughter, Nora, Brian (Charmian's father), Bob and Dennis. The three boys all made their careers in music. Brian (born 27 November 1911) enjoyed a glittering career on the US West Coast. Younger brother Dennis (13 August 1923) achieved universal fame through his quirky scores for the "Mr. Magoo" cartoons. He also wrote a great deal of music in later years for London publishers’ background music libraries. Bob (born on 24 July 1917) in Toronto, Ontario was known as a 'legend of light music'. http://www.robertfarnonsociety.org.uk/index.php/robert-farnon/biography
Charmian has two sisters, Darleen and Sharon (known as Shannon) who have also been in the film business.
