CONCERT AND VARIETY ENTERTAINMENT IN GILFORD.
A concert and variety and entertainment was given in Castle Hill National School, Gilford on Friday evening, 15th inst, The Rev. P.P. Campbell, P.P., Tullylish, occupied the chairment, and the accommodation given by Castle Hill Schools, was taxed to the utmost extent. The first part of the programme was commenced by the school choir, a talented band of little juveniles, who received their instructions from Mrs. H. Boyle, their teacher. One and all distinguished themselves by their clever singing and acting, which was deserving of the highest praise. An action song, entitled, “The Teacher’s Guide,” was given by the children and heartily applauded. Mr. J. Maguire, Banbridge, sang “Jolly Jack Tar,” and in response to an encore sang “There was never was a coward where the shamrock grows”; piano duet by the Missess Edgar, Loughbrickland; “ The Shepherd’s Evening Song,” which was well applauded; song, “Genevieve,” Mrs. B. Byrne, Banford, and in response to a well-merited encore she sang “Paddy Morgan’s Band.” A violin solo by Miss Angela O’Neill, Lurgan, was well received, and the song by Miss Greer, Gilford, entitled, “The Wrong Man, “received spirited applause. Missie Vera O’Neill gave an Irish Jig, which was heartily applauded. Mr. F. Armstrong, Laurencetown, “I’ll Take You Home Again Kathleen;” duet (instrumental), by Miss L. Byrne and Miss T. Byrne, Poyntzpass; song, “Knock At The Window,” by Miss Greer; dance, the “Highland Fling,” by Missie Vera O’Neill. The most interesting part of the programme was a song by Master Jim Mackle, a child of only 9 years old, which fairly brought down the house. Dressed in fancy costume, he appeared on the stage and sang as a solo “Whistling Jim,” and the entire audience cheered to echo. The proceedings ended with a farce entitled, “A Kiss In The Dark.”
