HIDDEN HISTORIES
Secrets of the Bann Valley
In response to popular demand, local historian, author and educationist Plunkett Campbell’s popular walking course of the Bann Valley is being offered again for spring. In this short course we will journey into west Down to uncover the rich linen legacy of the Bann Valley. We will visit Moyallon where the arrival of the Quakers in 1675 provided the spark for a thriving linen industry and explore Gilford, built by Hugh Dunbar (1790-1847) as one of Ireland’s earliest ‘factory towns’. We will visit Gilford Castle, scene of a siege by the Hearts of Steel of the 1770s and visit the church of Rev William Butler Yeats, rector of Tullylish during the Great Famine of the 1840s. We will consider the local resonances of 1641, the royal fort of Lisnagade, the history of Scarva with its mysterious Dane’s Cast and the 18th century Newry Canal. As ever, on Hidden History, morning coffee is sacrosanct! Access to private transport is essential.
