Maura McTeague from the Sligo Yeats Society met us at the church and very kindly gave us a short talk inside the church.

The Lissadell Estate is the home of husband and wife Edward Walsh, Constance Cassidy and their seven children.

After 70 years of neglect an intensive programme of restoration – without any public funding – has taken place in the House, Gardens, Stable Block and grounds since 2004 and Lissadell is once again a place of beauty.

No grants of any kind were made in respect of any part of the restoration, either for the house, the gardens or any part of the grounds. Every penny spent was earned by the family .

We then spent a couple of hours in the house and this photo was taken before the 'No Photographs' sign was pointed out by Helen McGrath! The house is enormous and while fairly straight forward in its layout, two enthusiasts did manage to get lost. Thankfully, the two ladies were finally located and Winnie McAvoy will never live it down!
